Prehistory Archaeological research has revealed just how distinctive and rich with human vicissitudes Sardinian prehistory has been, so as to put it in a position of importance and reference in the Mediterranean region. In the 1960s the “depth” of Prehistory went no farther back than the late Neolithic period (represented splendidly by objects of rare beauty) towards the end of the 4th millennium, whereas today one explores the margins of the early and mid Neolithic period as far as the 6th millennium. Recent discoveries of pre-Holocene fauna (16,000 years ago) in the earth of a grotto in the territory of Nuoro, have given hope of future finds on the human aspect of the early Palaeolithic period. In other places elaborated flint, transported and “in situ”, attributed to the Clactonian industry (not less than 250,000 years ago) take the origins of Sardinian Prehistory as far back as the early Palaeolithic, in line with the disclosures of the European continent.
